Thiene Castle is considered the most notable 15th-century Gothic building constructed in the Vicenza area as a private residence; it is an extraordinary example of a pre-Palladian Venetian villa, the only one of its kind—both in terms of architectural features and functional purpose - and a cornerstone in the evolution of Venetian villas.

From an architectural standpoint, the Venetian villa found its most accomplished expression in the 16th century through the designs of Andrea Palladio (1508–1580), who succeeded in synthesizing aesthetic and functional requirements into a type of villa that remained essentially unchanged until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. But Palladio did not invent the concept of the villa: he revitalized the forms that these rural residences had already taken on over the preceding centuries.

The castle thus served as a model for the subsequent development of Venetian villas, as a stately residence and a place of cultured and refined country living where the family’s interests were centered.
