Historical Reenactment of the Macia

Every year, in mid-August, the Italian city of Spilimbergo (in the Pordenone region) hosts the traditional historical reenactment of the Macia.

The reenactment takes its name from the ancient unit of measurement reproduced on a pillar of Palazzo La Loggia in Piazza Duomo. Called the Macia, this unit of measurement (dating back to 1438) served as a measuring tape for fabrics and corresponds to 68.4 cm.

This event helps honor our ancestors and remind the public of important milestones from the past. For the participants (reenactors) themselves, it’s a chance to test firsthand how various pieces of equipment and gear worked and how comfortable the clothing was. The festival attracts thousands of visitors, boosts local tourism and infrastructure, and creates a unique atmosphere for relaxation and entertainment.

Alternating performances by the Medieval War Drums of Cividale del Friuli, Hystorica Tympana Glemonae, and Cucurbitae Sonorae of Venzone during the traditional historical reenactment of the Macia.

The Brojluzzo guards carry the Sacred Banner of the Assumption from the Cathedral to the Church of San Rocco in Spilimbergo during the traditional historical reenactment of the Macia.
